The boring savings system that actually works

Automate it, name it, and forget it: the three-account setup I use to save without willpower.

Willpower is a terrible savings strategy. Automation is a great one. Here’s the simple system I use and recommend to friends.

Three accounts, three jobs

  1. Checking — bills. Paychecks land here. Fixed costs leave automatically.
  2. High-yield savings — safety. A target of 3–6 months of expenses. Untouchable except for real emergencies.
  3. Brokerage / retirement — growth. Automatic contributions on payday, invested in broad, low-cost index funds.

Pay yourself on payday, not at month-end

Set transfers to fire the day after each paycheck. What’s left in checking is what you can spend — no spreadsheet required.

Raise the rate, not the effort

Every time income goes up — a raise, a new client, a side gig — bump the automatic transfer by half of the increase. You still feel the raise, and your savings rate climbs quietly.

Check in quarterly

Once a quarter: confirm the emergency fund target, rebalance if needed, and adjust contributions. Fifteen minutes, four times a year.
